Diabetes

We hear this one word and our life crumbles in front of us. We will not be able to have sweets for life is an excruciating thought.

Desserts have always been a popular favorite. Since then it has been a riual, all festivities and celebrations are surrounded by sweetmeats. We relate sweets to happiness and auspiciousness. With few exceptions, all humans love to eat sweets.

What happened?

Diabetes is not caused by over-consumption of sweets. It is a metabolic disease. It is caused by following factors:

  1. Dis-balanced diet ~ not only quantity, but quality, time and distribution of meals in a day also play an important role
  2. Obesity
  3. Stress
  4. Inactive life
  5. Autoimmune disease
  6. Damage of pancreas
  7. Metabolic distress
  8. Medicinal side effects
  9. Hypertension
  10. Hormonal imbalance

I do not like to write about genetics. Genetics is like a red pen in your pocket. If you do not take it out and write on your hands it will not color your hand red. Sometimes it might leak and a slight touch on the pocket can color your hand too, but that’s a low probability.

Basically, if we do not give our genes the favorable environment to develop the disease, then there is a high probability that it might not develop.

Once you have diabetes

You know the human brain cannot hear NO! If I tell you, do not think of a monkey; your brain would immediately picture a monkey. It did not hear “not”.

Once your doctor tells you no sweets, your brain wants it more than ever.

There are also physiological changes in our body due to diabetes which causes more craving for sweets. I have had clients who never liked sweets, but want them after being diagnosed with diabetes.

What to do?

STOP EATING CARBS!

This is the worst advice one can give. Diabetic patients also need carbs. Twist is we need to add more carbohydrate sources that are complex carbs (high in fiber) and very less which are simple sugars (sugar, gur, honey, shakkar, misri, prasad (no God doesn’t save us from diabetes if we eat sweet prasaad), maida, cornflour, arrowroot powder etc.)

Wow that simple, you did that, your sugars still fluctuates.

We should go back to the causes of diabetes. Simple carbs were not the reason in the first place. How did it become the only part of treatment? It is a small part.

Actually we need a balanced diet with carbohydrate counting for each meal. If we are able to achieve that we can maintain blood sugar levels to normal and be safe. Disease will not progress.

That’s all?

No!

  • Be physically active,
  • Eat timely,
  • Maintain diet diary,
  • Sleep well and timely,
  • Drink adequate water,
  • De-stress by hobby/ family time/ hobbies/ music therapy etc.
  • Take medicines timely
  • Monitor blood pressure

How can I do this?

So much? Who has the time? What about your work? What about your responsibilities?

Well people who follow this and do not have diabetes also have 24 hours, work and responsibilities similar to the ones who have diabetes. All you need is an efficient counselor who can guide you for initial times, then you can continue with the learnt practices and keep yourself healthy for life.

India is diabetic capital of the world. The disease progresses to kidney damage, heart problems, neurological problems, retina damage etc. Maximum kidney patients in India have developed it due to diabetes. It’s a wake up call. IF you need help, Contact me now.
